Steffes Group Auctions Attract Wide Base of Bidders

Steffes Group auctions attract wide base of bidders, ensuring fair market value for sellers

When the market is weak, it’s all the more important for farmers to get the best possible price on their products. That’s especially important in a major producer state like Minnesota, which consistently leads the Midwest in hay production.

This has made Steffes Group’s regular hay auctions a vitally important marketplace, not only for the state, but also for buyers from surrounding states such as North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Consigners typically bring 60 to 80 semi loads for each auction.

“The hay market follows the dairy market very closely, and of course the dairy markets have been trending downward for a long while. Hay farmers typically grow about 20% of their hay as a cash crop, and it’s important for them to be able to get it sold as quickly as possible, at the best price the market will bear. Our well-established hay auctions attract a strong field of buyers, and producers rely on that,” said Representative Randy Kath.

Hay auctions are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from September through May. In June through August, auctions are held monthly.
