How family, passion, and perseverance continue to shape the Heuer family's dairy legacy.

Two Careers, One Farm, One Legacy

June is Dairy Month, a time to recognize the dedication, passion, and perseverance of dairy farm families. For siblings Danielle Heuer, Settlement Accountant, and Patrick Heuer, Setup Coordinator, at Steffes' Litchfield, Minnesota office, dairy farming isn't just part of their background—it's a way of life.

Growing Up Dairy

Growing up on their family's dairy farm, some of Dani's favorite memories revolved around preparing cattle for the dairy shows including the Meeker County Fair and spending summers working alongside family.

"Going to the county fair to show off the hard work we had put in all year was always fun and a highlight of the summer," she said.

Beyond the fair, it was the everyday moments that made dairy life special—from cows seeking attention in the pasture to curious calves in the barn.

A Family Passion

Their connection to the dairy industry began long before they were born. Dani and Patrick's parents met while working in the dairy industry and shared a passion for dairy cattle that became the foundation of the family farm, Desthaven Holsteins.

"It is because of our parents that we have been and still are active in the dairy community," Dani said.

From learning how to show cattle in the ring to preparing animals for competition, their parents instilled a love for the industry that continues today.

Finding Their Place at Steffes

That passion eventually led both siblings to careers with Steffes. Patrick transitioned from working as a cattle fitter for dairy sales and shows into his role in Litchfield, while Dani joined the accounting team after earning her accounting degree.

Today, both careers allow them to stay closely connected to the family dairy operation while building careers they enjoy.

Life on a Dairy Farm

Life on a dairy farm doesn't stop when the workday begins or ends.

"A typical day for me starts and ends with the farm," Dani said.

Before work, she takes care of the calves and heifers. After a full day at Steffes, she heads home to help with evening chores alongside her mom.

It's also one of the things she wishes more people understood about dairy farming.

"When you live and work on a dairy farm, it's like running a 24/7 daycare," Dani said. "The cows depend on you for pretty much everything."

Carrying the Legacy Forward

When their father passed away, the family faced one of its most difficult challenges. But for Dani and Patrick, the future of the dairy was never in question.

"It was not a question whether we were going to keep the cows," Dani said. "This has been a dream and a passion for both our parents since they got married. We have been working toward having the depth of pedigree and the quality of cows for a very long time "

Together, they stepped up, sharing responsibilities on the farm while continuing their careers. Through family support and a shared commitment to the herd their parents built, they found a way forward.

More Than a One-Person Job

Today, Dani and Patrick continue to build on the foundation their parents created.

"There have been good times and tough times, but we've made it through together," Dani said.

The Heuers hope their story reminds others that dairy farming is never a one-person job.

"There are many people who help behind the scenes to make it a success," Dani said. "Sometimes it's hard, but when you're doing what you love, it's all worth it—especially when you have family to share it with."
